My Hair Journey

"My Relaxed Hair"

After many years of weave and getting relaxers my hair was incredibly damaged. I wore weave because this is what the media portrays as beautiful and never imagined that I would go natural. I didn’t suffer damage from relaxers, but I suffered damage from how negligent I was when I wore weaves. I was tried of having damaged hair, and I really needed a change. Instead of doing the BC I transitioned, getting my hair straighten & trimmed every two weeks.

"The Transition"

The responses were horrible when I told people I was going natural. Everybody kept asking me was I crazy, and I got the worst comments from my family members. During my transition period, instead of wearing protective styling I would go to the salon and get my hair straighten. Going from curly to straight isn’t always easy, and my hair would stick out and look odd! It wouldn’t hold curls, and I’d get harsh criticism. I don’t recommend anyone straightening there hair every week during transitioning. I didn’t know any better, but I know now that constant straighten can damage your curl pattern. [BEWARE] <-- wear protective styles! “Please Perm her hair” one family member said to another, but I refused to let there nasty comments discourage me. I made the decision to go natural for myself, not for anyone else.

"Natural at Last"

After 1 year of transitioning I cut off the remaining relaxed ends. Finally, after everything I had been through I had natural hair. I was so happy, and had no idea how to style my hair. The first day I just wore it in a wash& go!

"Advice"

You can do it! Don’t listen to the harsh critics, I recommend it…and you don’t have to BC! I didn’t and I’m really happy with my natural hair. Growing Natural hair takes time & plenty of patience. That’s one thing that my journey taught me PATIENCE! && Be confident. A major part of this journey is learning how to be confident in your own skin. Loving yourself, and hair that GOD gave you!
